#2138 ... Sultan on Featherston

The Sultan of Brunei crosses Featherston Street returning from a lunch with with Bruneian students studying in New Zealand. The Sultan of Brunei is in New Zealand for a four-day state visit. His Majesty Hassanal Bolkiah, aged 66, touched down in his Royal Brunei 767-200 at Wellington Airport this morning. His majesty will be in the country from Monday to Thursday and will be officially welcomed at Government House tomorrow. During his visit, the Sultan will attend a dinner hosted by Prime Minister John Key, meet with Labour leader David Shearer, attend question time at Parliament, and lay a wreath at the National War Memorial in Wellington. Brunei is one of the world's richest countries due to its oil and gas reserves and has a population of around 400,000. The sultan's wealth is estimated at US$20 billion and he has one of the world's largest and most expensive car collections, one of them plated with gold. Sultan Bolkiah is the prime minister, tourism minister, finance minister, defence minister, head of Islam, head of customs and the inspector general of the police. He's ruled the country since 1967 when his father abdicated the throne. The sultan is accompanied by about 50 officials and staff.

#2133 ... It was a BIG hall

YES all those noisy trains fitted in and by all accounts it was a roudy meeting. Jokes aside ... since the new trains have worked the Johnsonville line, there has been a major increase in screeching noises apparently from the train wheels going around the tigher curves on the line. Having less carriages reduces the noise but also reduces the passenger capacity. Residents close to the line are frustrated with the disturbance and this was a meeting to seek remedial action.

#2119 ... Kiwano

Any interesting look and taste ... now grown in New Zealand. The horned melon, also called African horned cucumber or melon, kiwano, jelly melon, hedged gourd, or melano, is an annual vine in the cucumber and melon family. It is considered to be the ancestor of the other cultivated melons. Often known by its nickname in the southeastern United States, blowfish fruit, it is grown for its fruit, which look like oval melons with horn-like spines. The fruit of this plant is edible, but it is used as often for decoration as for food. When ripe, it has a yellow-orange skin and a lime green, jelly-like flesh with a tart taste, and texture similar to a cucumber. The horned melon is native to Africa, and it is now grown in California, Chile, Australia and New Zealand, as well.
