#3065 ... Changing Cityscape

More redevelopment in the city at the lower end of Cuba Mall. Here's some info about the site and the future plan by Willis Bond.
>>>>>>

A mixed use redevelopment combining retail with other complementary uses is planned for this heritage site in the heart of Cuba Mall, Wellington.

In 2012, Willis Bond acquired the former Deka site on the corner of Cuba and Dixon Streets. In 2014, the neighbouring building (which houses the Farmers department store) and 104 – 106 Cuba Street (home to Rex Royale, Cosmic Comics and the Matterhorn) were also purchased.  The combined sites (with a footprint of almost 10,000m2) represent the largest and most exciting redevelopment opportunity in central Wellington.

As part of the first stage for our exciting plans for this site, we are pleased to announce our latest Wellington project, in conjunction with the Whitireia WelTec Strategic Partnership, for their new Joint Centre of Excellence in the Performing Arts and Creative Industries.

Construction will start in autumn 2015 for a brand new 6 storey building, housing 1,500sqm of prime retail space, and the 9,000sqm campus focused on creative and performing arts. The heritage façade will be strengthened and retained and the building’s structure will be designed to 130% of the New Building Standard under the NZ Building Code.

Construction is scheduled to complete in November 2017.  New retail spaces will be available from mid-2017.

This project represents the first part of a complete overhaul of this prominent site, and will be a vital cornerstone for the remainder of the redevelopment.  Design is underway for a new development to revitalise the larger site, with brand new retail, hospitality, office and residential spaces planned.

#3038 ... More Wet

Yes another wet day and feels worse as yesterday was a calm mostly dry day.
At least umbrellas will be OK as no wind!!!

#3037 ... White Wash

Thanks to Stuff for this post. It demonstrates the convoluted processes that council authorities go through when managing our city.

"Someone at Wellington City Council must be suffering from white line fever.

The council has proposed changing its bylaws to make parking spaces marked with paved stones legal, just a couple of months after it painted white lines over all of its paved car parks.

The rush to whitewash the city's parking was sparked after a judge was given a parking ticket in Blair St, off Courtenay Pl, but successfully overturned it on the grounds that the parking spaces were not properly marked.

The council discovered six other streets had similar problems and jumped to correct the situation. It moved with such haste that contractors did not get the white lines straight enough on Allen St, and had to repaint them a week later.

Changing the bylaw would allow the council to use brick or "other ways" to mark out parking spaces, while still being able to issue parking tickets."
